séquence: LUNE et L’AUTRE (1999)
19 Août 1999, date de l’éclipse totale du soleil, observable en France.
Ici le véritable reflet du phénomène, trempé dans le café…
Ayant préalablement remarqué que le reflet naturel du soleil apparaissait tout petit dans la tasse à café, il fallait que je trouve un » truc » pour augmenter son diamètre, in vivo. J’aurais pu imaginer un télescope y projetant son agrandissement, mais cela était exclu car l’ombre du tube aurait parasité toute la scène…
La solution ? Prendre une grande plaque de verre, la suspendre par un trépied au-dessus de la tasse et y déposer une optique nue de façon à ce que l’image agrandie du soleil vienne se positionner juste au centre de la tasse, sans ombre portée. Le jour J, à l’heure H, ne me restait plus qu’à photographier cinq étapes de l’éclipse reflétée dans le café, en gardant toujours la même ouverture de diaphragme pour capter l’assombrissement du jour pendant le phénomène.
Un jeu qui consistait à copier tout ce qui se passait là-haut pour le coller ensuite sur mes petites contingences terrestres…

I had already noticed before how small the sun looked when reflected in a coffee cup, so I had to find a way of increasing its diameter, in vivo. I could have used a telescope to project an enlarged image, but that possibility was to be excluded because the shadow of its shaft would have spoilt the effect…The solution I found was to take a large sheet of glass, hang it from a tripod over the cup and place a single lens on it so that the enlarged image of the sun falls right in the middle of the cup, with no projected shadow. On day D, at time T, all I had to do was to photograph five stages of the eclipse reflected in the coffee, while maintaining the same diaphragm aperture, to capture the darkening of the day during the phenomenon. A game that consisted in copying all that was happening up there, and then fixing it onto my little earthly means…
Just my way of stirring sugar into the sun.
